The Positives Of Deepfakes

Over this past year, there has been a surge in the increase of deep fakes around the internet. Most people might see this as an issue due to the vast spread of misinformation as well as sometimes just graphic content, but can this latest trend actually be a good thing? Below are some things we consider a positive of this influx of deepfakes online.

One positive we will continue to see in our world of entertainment is the use of deepfakes in TV shows and movies. Some of our favorite actors/actresses are aging fast and aren't able to perform how they could in the prime of their careers. People also age and sometimes the actors end up playing a "young" character when they obviously are much older. The usage of deepfakes can actually de-age actors to help make some movies seem more realistic, an example of this is in the hit TV show The Mandalorian using de-aging on Luke Skywalker Actor to help make the show more accurate.

Another more lighthearted positive is the meme aspect of these deepfakes. As long as people are not being discriminated against or using deepfakes to spread hateful messages, deepfakes are fair game. We have all seen a video of celebrities playing video games together chatting it up or maybe someone singing or dancing quite silly, these types of deepfakes are lighthearted and do not hurt people's feelings, the humor aspect is positive, and as long as people can be respectful of one another.

Deepfakes are on the rise and do not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Most people will try to tell you this is an issue and that we need to combat this latest trend immediately. We say that deepfakes arent all that bad and can actually be a great use of technology as long as boundaries are not crossed and we have respect for each other. Let us know what you think? Are there positives to Deepfakes? Or should we try to remove this latest trend.

  1. I think the positives can outweigh the negatives only if the public learns to recognize deepfakes and how to think critically about what they're seeing. :)
