Deep Fake Statistics and What They Mean
Statistics of deepfakes from the years 2022-2023 may be a big shock to many of us and show just how scary they are becoming normalized. Studies show that deep fakes have been spiking in social media about 10x more in 2022-2023. In North America itself, deep fakes have shown a massive increase of 1740%! Anyway, in APAC there has been a 1530% increase, in Europe, 780% increase, in MEA, 450% increase and Latin America, 410% increase. These statistics show that deep fakes are increasing at a scary rapid rate and will only go higher due to AI and other online services.
You may also wonder, how many deep fakes are surfacing online in general? Well, we have the answer. As of a recent study this year (2023) Analysts have found around 95 820 deep fake videos, 85 online channels that were created solely for deep fake content and above 100 websites dedicated to deep fake purposes. It has also been discovered that 98% of deep fake videos found online are pornographic and 99% of the pornographic content is about women. This means that a mass majority of all deepfakes are for online pleasures and women are the ones suffering greatly from deep fakes as it portrays a bad image for them.
Although the study in 2022-2023 may be shocking, 2019 has shown the biggest increase of all time with a 550% increase in that year alone! As expected, majority of the videos and other content relating to deep fakes were related to pornography. Studies have also shown that it takes an average of 25 minutes to make a pornographic deep fake video with a clear facial image of the person being used for the deep fake (mostly celebrities). All of these videos and pictures online of deep fakes have a total view count of 303 million across all platforms.
